GLAUDI by Johana Hernandez

GLAUDI by Johana Hernandez is an LA fashion designer specializing in couture dresses, bridal gowns, and  now menswear! This month she is featured in the Beverly Hills Courier Style Magazine as the first Latina to be in the magazine. She has designed for celebrities and was nominated by PEOPLE Magazine en Español in 2014 as one of the “25 Most Powerful Women.” We had a chance to chat with Johana about how she got started, what inspires her, and all about her new menswear line:

1. Can you give us some background on GLAUDI, such as how you got started?

GLAUDI by Johana Hernandez is a luxury couture bridal and Mens bespoke suit designer specializing in empowering women and men of all shapes and sizes with elegant styles. I grew up in the fashion industry from the bottom up seeing my parents work long hours in factories. I learned how clothing was made at a young age. At the young age of 19-27 years old, I designed for many international brands such as Seven Jeans, DKNY, also plus size for Lane Bryant. My first collection at the age of 19 was featured on Wall Street Journal. In 2011, we launched GLAUDI named after my mother Gladis to honor their hard work and followed my passion of creating beautiful designs all hand made to fit every client perfectly. Now we present our collection in Paris, New York, and LA Fashion Week; additionally, have dressed top celebrities. I was also mentored by Nichole Richie, on a reality TV show on NBC called, “Fashion Star”. Now with GLAUDI we have not only dressed top celebrities, but have built a school for kids in El Salvador. Our brand is all about giving back and empowering one another through fashion.

2. How long have you been in business?

Since 2011 but I started designing professionally since I was 19 years of age.

3. How many locations do you have?

We have two locations, one in Beverly Hills on Brighton and Camden and one in Downey, CA.

4. What made you want to get into bridalwear?

I love making unforgettable designs and a wedding gown is that once in a lifetime and one of a kind just like the bride! I love seeing our brides and grooms with tears of joy and love when they see one another gives my life so much purpose to be part of the fairytale love story.

5. Why have you decided to now get into menswear?

I’ve always wanted to launch a men’s line, but it was never the right time. My Dad passed away this year and felt the importance to empower men as they are key to family life. My Dad’s name Is “Reynaldo” his short name was “Rey.” In Spanish it means king. I want to respect and honor men like my father. Therefore, I felt it was the perfect time after losing him and feeling how important men are in our lives. As women, we need to love them. As a female designer, I can help to empower men by appreciating them and honoring them. It’s time to get back to business. I want to empower men through the men’s suits, the same way I do women with women’s suits and gowns.

6. Do you design all of the dresses yourself? If so, where do you get your inspiration from?

I design all the dresses and my inspiration is by women and men who love feeling empowered.
