Benheart is an artisanal leather company with 100% handmade, hand-stitched, and vegetable dyed in Italy. However, they aren’t your typical leather company, they have a truly miraculous back story. Ben, the designer went through a huge life changing moment in his mid-20s that led him to create Benheart. Find out all of the details from Dominique, owner of the Benheart Beverly Hills location, who opened the store with his wife Katherine Kelly Lang from CBS The Bold & The Beautiful:
Can you give me a little background on Benheart?
The company was started about 12 years ago by Ben who immigrated from Morocco to Italy. When he was only 5 years old his mom took him with her to Italy. Then at 25 he had a heart attack while playing soccer and needed a transplant. His doctor told him that his likelihood of surviving the transplant isn’t great unless he is put into an induced comma. Ben was in the comma for 7 months, but he survived and his life was completely changed after that. Then he decided to start his own fashion line, hence the name, “Benheart”. He began by making belts from a cart in the streets of Venice, Italy. Now there are 9 stores in Italy, one in Japan, one in Paris, and several other places throughout the world. This is the first location in the United States.
When did you first open the Beverly Hills location?
My wife Katherine and I opened this location in December 2019.
What are your most popular items?
Our most popular items are our jackets, belts, and shoes.
How are you combatting the decline in foot traffic throughout the City due to COVID-19?
Currently we are doing pretty well sales-wise. I actually walk through the City and talk about our products to people and we get a lot of sells that way.
Benheart obviously has a huge and inspirational back story behind it already, but do you have any additional interesting facts about the business?
Everything is 100% hand-stitched and hand died in Italy and we use vegetable dye. Barack Obama has some of our jackets. Nick Fleetwood, founder of Fleetwood Mac, also owns tons of our stuff. We get a lot of rock people and celebs too.
